Year 5 Poetry – Inspired by “The Owl and the Pussycat”

In Miss Scott’s Year 5 English Group we have been reading “The Owl and the Pussycat” by Edward Lear. The poem was written in 1871 (140 years ago!). The “The Owl and the Pussycat” is considered to be a Classic Poem, because it has stood the test of time and is still very popular today.

It is also a Narrative Poem because it tells a story.

We have written our own Narrative Poems inspired by the style and pattern of the “The Owl and the Pussycat”. Perhaps one day some of these will be considered as Classics as well! What do you think of our efforts?

The Newt and the Caterpilly
By Mr Green

The Newt and the Caterpilly
Went to the shops
On a three wheeled rollerskate,
They took cups of coffee
And great slabs of toffee
All balanced on a china plate
“The shops are so busy
It’s making me dizzy
Cried Newty in utter despair
The rollerskate swerved and crashed into the kerb
And Caterpilly flew up in the air, the air, the air.
Caterpilly flew up in the air.

He gave her a ring
And she started to sing
Oh and they started kissing.

We’ve been reading The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and it inspired us to write these Haikus.  They have a syllable pattern of 5, 7, 5.  Could you write some?

Beyond sensation
The Iron Man stands fearful,
Before the dragon.
Ben

“Bed of Fire”
Getting warm then hot,
Lies the dreaded bed of fire,
As the dragon stares.
Amy

Cliff standing lonely,
Dark night and wind surround him,
Step into space – fall.
Mr Green

The man of metal,
Scoffs lots of iron for tea,
Farmers get angry.
Finlay
